The GUI in this version has been enhanced to make data entry even faster. This version now uses SMTP for emailing from the windows app - no longer relying on a particular email client to be installed The wide variety of reports include graphical and analytical reports to see where most of your support issues are coming from. The reports can also be easily exported to a variety of file formats and emailed to upper management. The browser interface requires Microsoft PWS or IIS There are still no additional per user charges for either the windows interface, email module, or browser based interface. All are included in the site license price. An Open Report menu option let's you access either your own reports created with Crystal Reports 9.0 or custom reports designed for you by the developer.

Creating Graphical Reports

Part one of article:

By: Frahan Zia

Some of the power that Microsoft .NET provides to accomplish converting business data into reports using Crystal Reports.

Editor's Note: This article's code has been updated to work with the final release of the .Net framework.

Reports are an integral part of many applications. Business activities like monthly sales, collected receivables, etc., are usually presented in reports. All to the good, then, if the reports can be presented in a graphical format - graphs allow us to take in data more quickly and spot trends more easily. In this article, we will take a simple but fully functional example of a business web application to create the scenario for displaying such reports. Our application will be a 3-tier model. We will be using ASP.NET with C# code behind pages to accomplish our task, with a Visual Basic .NET middle tier component and SQL

XML Data Type

Author: S.Y.M. Wong-A-Ton

Publsihed: 10 January 2007

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 introduced a new data type, the XML data type. Now you can associate an XML schema with XML table columns to force them to adhere to constraints defined within the specified schema. Such XML table columns are ideal to save InfoPath forms in, since InfoPath forms are based on XML schemas and have XML data as output.
In this article we will set up a database table that has an XML column associated with the XML schema of an InfoPath form. We will then use an ASP.NET page to submit and save InfoPath forms to the database table. We will also discuss common challenges you may encounter when trying to set up such a solution.
This article assumes that you have experience developing InfoPath forms, working with <a class="iAs" style="COLOR: darkgreen; 4 Server Technology
by:Reports guru David McAmis

And at long last there is a single merge module you can use to deploy your application, which makes creating installation and setup packages much easier. There has been a renewed focus on this area with this release and it is now possible to setup packages that install right the first time.

On the Java side of things, the enhancements are along the same lines, with the exception of dynamic parameters which didn’t make it in time for the first release. However, there are enough new features though to keep most Java developers happy, including a new JavaServer Faces(JSF) Viewer and set of custom JSF tags to cut down on development time.

There are a number of enhancements to the Java API itself, with additional methods that give more control over the data source and location. There is also an updated version of the Java Reporting Component that brings it closer to rough parity to with the other platform API’s.

Updated Server Technology
This version of the product not only includes new features, both for report design and application development but also brings together the platform components from Crystal Decisions and Business Objects. Business Objects bought Crystal Decisions over a year ago and this version represents the first “combined” product featuring the tools and functionality from both product lines.

The first immediate benefit for application developers is Crystal Reports Server, which provides a subset of the features and functionality found in Business Objects Enterprise, which is an enterprise framework for publishing reports to the Web, as well as scheduling and distributing reports in a secure environment. And in addition to the subset of features, it is also a subset of the price, at around AU$12,000 for 5 concurrent users.
Crystal Reports Server brings the core report scheduling and distribution framework and functionality to application developers, which they can use to create scalable, multi-tier applications for small to medium-sized user bases. And when scalability to thousands of users is required, there are only minor changes required to use the same code with the full-strength Business Objects Enterprise.

It also bears mentioning that the licensing within both Crystal Reports and related products has been simplified and now is much more competitive with other products in the market. For most internal applications you won’t need any additional licensing and if you are developing applications for commercial distribution, there is a free runtime for thick-client applications and simplified process for any components that are licensed and would require a software license.

Summary
So in the end, this release offers a little bit of something for everyone. Report developers will love the new look and feel and features found in the report designer itself, while application developers can look forward to an updated set of tools and technologies to help them easily integrate reports into their application.

New Developer Features

Part 3 of Crystal Reports XL
by: Reports guru David McAmis

For developers, there is a grab-bag of new features regardless of whether you develop in .NET, COM or Java. To start, Crystal Reports XI now includes the ability to store images external to the report file itself. This may seem like a small thing, but it has been a sore point with developers for a while, especially with web developers who want to use Crystal Reports in Web applications but don’t want to store the images in the report itself, which could increase the file size dramatically.

In addition, the use of CSS Style Sheets has been better documented in this version, making it a viable option for Web developers who want to integrate reports with the same look-and-feel into their web applications.

For application developers integrating reports into their .NET applications, the viewer components have been updated (Figure 3) and include all of the new features found in the report designer (dynamic parameters, new export formats, etc.). There is a setting to disable tool-tips, which was an annoying feature in previous versions, as most report developers would not enter tool-tips for each element on the report.

Dynamic Parameters

Part 2 of Crystal Reports XI
by:Reports guru David McAmis takes the new version for a spin.

This version introduces the concept of “cascading” parameters, where the values shown in a list of values are determined by your previous selection. For example, going back to our previous example, you could set up two parameters, “Manager” and “Employee”. Whenever you selected a manager, the next parameter value list would be filtered to only show those employees who work for that manager.

This flexible approach to report parameters should mean less time coding custom application pages for reporting and more time spent getting on with the application development.
In terms of time-saving features, the updated charting components make it possible to simply insert a chart into your report and let Crystal Reports decide what data and chart type should be created. Often this will not be the final desired result, but it does make it easy to quick pull together visual, information-rich reports without having to click through multiple dialogs to get a simple chart.

This same concept has also been applied to cross-tabs, with a single click all that is required to place a cross-tab object in your report. Unlike charts, there isn’t an easy way to automatically select the content for the cross-tab but just the creation of a blank cross-tab is enough of a time saver to make you want to use cross-tabs again.

Crystal Reports XI

Part 1 of Crystal Reports XL
by: Local reports guru David McAmis takes the new version for a spin.

Most developers might know Crystal Reports from versions included in Studio, Visual Studio.NET, and other popular developer IDE’s such as BEA Workshop, C# Builder, Delphi 2005, JBuilder, WebSphere.

In this latest installment both report and application developers have something to be excited about as there are a host of new features for report design and integration. Here’s a run-down of what you can expect in this release.

Updated Report Designer The first thing developers will notice when they first open the Crystal Reports XI designer is a new user interface. The changes to the UI are apparent from the start, with a new “Start Page” that features links to external resources, sample reports, a list of report wizards, and the most recent reports you have been working with.

The toolbars and icons have also been updated and developers who are familiar with Crystal Reports will notice that when you open multiple reports, a new tabbed interface has been included to allow you to switch quickly between open reports. The report designer also features a new “Project Workbench”, shown below in Figure 1, that you can use to organise reports into projects and publish these reports en-masse to Crystal Reports Server.

Taking Advantage

In addition to maps, charts, and graphs, ArcGIS provides two tools for generating reports that are available directly from the ArcMap interface. A generic reporting tool creates simple reports that can be added to a layout and can use group layers. The other choice, Crystal Reports, is an industry standard application that produces sophisticated, presentation-quality reports.

With ArcGIS 8.3, users receive a full standalone copy of Crystal Reports 9 from Crystal Decisions. This article shows users how to take advantage of the Crystal Reports wizard that is integrated with ArcMap in ArcGIS ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo. The wizard minimizes the learning curve for new users by walking them through the report creation process and helps more experienced users generate reports quickly. For stand-alone reports, Crystal Reports supplies extensive sorting and grouping functionality and incorporates formulas and templates that speed report generation.

However, if an appropriate template is not available for the desired report, the formatting options available solely from the wizard are limited. Because ArcGIS comes with a full copy of Crystal Reports, a good strategy is to rough the report out using the wizard from the ArcGIS interface and go directly into Crystal Reports to refine the report.

Two-Pass Report Processing

Crystal Reports processes reports in two stages. This is called the Two-Pass Report Processing Model. The first pass creates the primary data to be printed. During the second pass this data is further processed to finalize it for printing. The first pass is used to read individual records one at a time and calculate any formulas that use them. This pass will only calculate the formulas that are based on raw data within a record or that perform simple calculations. As each record is read and the formulas are calculated, the results are stored in a temporary file to be used during the second pass.

After the first pass is finished, Crystal Reports performs a second pass where it evaluates all summary functions on the data. This wasn't possible during the first pass because all the data had not been read yet. During the second pass all the raw data has been read into the temporary file and it can be evaluated and summarized as a whole.
Understanding the type of data that is processed during the Two-Pass Processing Model is essential to being able to write formulas and summarize data. Different chapters throughout this book reference this model for explaining when you can and can't use certain reporting functionality.

Visual Studio .NET

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET provides a comprehensive reporting solution for .NET developers that is thoroughly integrated with both the Visual Studio .NET IDE and the .NET Framework. Crystal Reports supports ADO.NET, XML Web Services, and ASP.NET server controls and caching. It also integrates seamlessly with the Visual Studio .NET Server Explorer, toolbox, and design environment. It has a rich programming model and flexible options for customizing and deploying reports. Whatever it is, we will be able to customize and extend it with the SalesLogix Architect. Good times will be had by all when this happens because we will finally be able to do just about whatever we want with reporting.
At this point, reports will be launched with the Crystal Report Designer Component (RDC). But, you don't have to wait until then to take advantage of this feature. It's available now. If you wanted to, you could create your own reporting desktop (MainView) to handle your reporting needs. When I export a layout, the TableFrame elements do not appear. This seems to be a known issue/limitation. OK, fine, I thought, I’ll just use crystal reports to export a Dataset to pdf via the ReportDocument. But nooo, I kept getting an exception saying :”Access to report file denied. Another program may be using it”.

I tried several workarounds. But none solve the problem. So I went ahead and wrote a server object extension and it worked just fine. Seems like Crystal Reports XI just doesn’t like running within the ASPNET process space. Fortunately, the same code ran just fine within the SOC. Next step is concatenating the layout pdf onto the report pdf with aspose pdf.

ASP.NET images appear as a red "X"

Lately I've seen a lot of questions posted stating that when and ASP.NET app is deployed to the webserver that the report icons appear as red “X”s. The BusObj support site lists two KB articles to help you resolve this.

In summary, there are two things happening. The first is that you are using Forms Authentication and you don't have permission to view the file crystalimagehandler.aspx. You have to modify the web config file to make this accessible. The second reason is that the app was deployed manually and not using with the merge modules. The files were not deployed correctly and you have to either move the files to the GAC or copy them to the same virtual directory as crystalimagehandler.aspx.

The KB articles are here:

http://support.businessobjects.com/library/kbase/articles/c2013824.asp

http://support.businessobjects.com/library/kbase/articles/c2014054.asp

A third problem I've seen, although I can't find any KB articles on it, is that the virtual directory that stores the images never gets created. As mentioned before, this can happen during a manual installation. To fix this you need to create a folder within the Inetpub/wwwroot folder called 'CrystalReportWebFormViewer2'. Copy from the development machine the file in the Viewers folder (and its subfolders). This is found in the Crystal Reports folder of the MS.NET Program Files installation location. After creating the folder and copying the image files over, make it an IIS application by right-clicking on it and selecting Properties. Then click the Create button. Now you ASP.NET application will be able to use the virtual directory to display the images on the report.

Hope this helps,

Brian Bischof

Crystal Reports Tip for the Day

Specifying the Database Name Dynamically I'm back to doing Crystal Reports for one of my long-term consulting projects... ick. For the project I work on there's two databases: a test database and the live database, the obvious difference being that the test database has test data and the live database is currently in use with live data. Both have identical schemas.

Anywho, when creating a Crystal Report through VS.NET you have to specify the datasource that you want to use for the report, which can be done through an ADO DataSet or, as commonly the case in this particular project, through a view, table, or stored procedure on the actual database. Since I am developing on the test database, I've always connected to the test database when crafting my Crystal Reports. In my ASP.NET page I programmatically display my Crystal Report by first setting the logon information using the code Eric Landes shares in his article titled Automagically Display Crystal Parameters. Specifically, in the ApplyInfo() I set the DatabaseName and other related server properties to the current database I am using, which is spelled out in the application's Web.config file. On the development server the Web.config file indicates to use the test database; on the production server, it says to use the live database.

My assumption was that setting this logon info through this manner would have the correct datasource be called from the Crystal Report when viewed on an ASP.NET page. That is, if I created the CR referencing the test database, but the CR was on the live site, it would use the live site's underlying data. Today, when pushing up my latest batch of reports to the live server, I found out that assumption was incorrect. Meh. The result - the reports on the live site were showing data from the test database. All of a sudden end users were seeing information about people named Mr. Test and Mr. Test 2. Eep.

My workaround was to augment the ApplyInfo() method, adding the following line in the For Each oCRTable In oCRTables loop:

oCRTable.Location = oCRConnectionInfo.DatabaseName & ".dbo." & oCRTable.Location.Substring(oCRTable.Location.LastIndexOf(".") + 1)

This modifies the datasource SQL used from something like testDB.dbo.TableName to realDB.dbo.TableName, where realDB is the database name specified in the Web.config file (so its using the test database for its datasource when working on the development server and the live database for its datasource when viewing a report on the live site).

Hope this saves someone else the headache I experienced! :-)

CRD Full Description

CRD is an application for Windows that saves time and money by making it easy to define single or packages of Crystal reports, schedule and run them automatically, and send the reports to print, fax, disk, or email in a number of standard formats.

Simply set up a schedule stating how often you would like each report to run, whether you'd like the output in Word, Excel, HTML, RTF, Acrobat, RPT, text format, and more and who it should be sent to.

It's easy to schedule reports to run at a specific date and time, or to run them hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly - or when spcified events occur
The same report can be scheduled to be run multiple times with different parameters, formats, frequencies, and destinations.

By automating repetitive reporting tasks, CRD ensures that reports are created and distributed when needed, without error, and without costly support time.
CRD's familiar Explorer-like interface makes it easy to define and schedule report packages. The context (right-click) menus and full copy-and-paste support make it easy to create complex distribution schedules.

Features include the ability of Windows NT4/2000/XP users to run CRD as a service, a improved intuitive user interface, a comprehensive scheduler that lets you create reports at any frequency, and send them to print, fax, disk, or email (using SMTP, MAPI, and CRDMail), a wide range of export formats, dynamic database functionality, custom frequency calendars, a built in address book, bulk printing, ftp folder output, single and ranges of parameters, conditional scheduling, group bursting, multi-threading, clustering and lots more.

Whether you're spending too much time running and distributing Crystal Reports output to line managers, or you need to provide corporate management with tailored reports on a regular schedule, CRD gives you the tools that you need.

Crystal Reports .NET 2005 FAQ

I've been seeing some confusion lately about the release of Visual Studio .NET 2005 and Crystal Reports. I wanted to provide a FAQ to clear things up. Crystal Reports .NET 2005 First off, Crystal Reports WILL be in Visual Studio 2005. I've been hearing rumors that it won't ship with VS 2005 and this is definitely not the case. Makes me wonder who starts these rumors and if they have any knowledge whatsoever of what is really going on.

Secondly, Microsoft has announced that VS 2005 will have a “Go Live“ license. This means that even though the product is still in beta, MS is saying its okay to use it in production applications. Personally, I don't know how they can say that a product is in beta, but you can use it in production. Anyway, you will also be able to use Crystal Reports in your production applications b/c it has the same license.

I've been working with a recent build of the CR.NET Beta 2 build and it is very stable. Although I don't have the list of bugs that are being worked on, I'm sure that there are things that might not work for you and it will be more stable when VS 2005 is officially released later in the year.

But I assume that the same applies to VS 2005. Anyone willing to use a beta product in production has a tendency to be more on the “bleeding edge“ rather than “cutting edge“ of technology and they know the risks involved. Crystal Reports XI Crystal Reports XI (version 11) was recently released and people are asking how this effects CR.NET 2005 with respect to features and compatibility.

The first thing you need to understand is that CR.NET 2005 is built using a version of CR 10. It takes a long time to integrate a product into the .NET IDE and fully test it according Microsoft's policies. Thus, the customization and integration of CR into VS 2005 was started before CR XI was around. Crystal Reports XI has more and newer features than CR .NET 2005 has. Even though CR.NET 2005 is being released after CR XI, it should not be considered an upgrade over CR XI. The most powerful version of Crystal Reports will always be the latest full product release.

Since CR XI is available today and VS 2005 is still in development, CR XI will not be immediately compatible with VS 2005. Business Objects will issue an upgrade to CR XI to make it compatible with VS 2005 once MS ships it. The upgrade details have not been announced yet. I hope this clears things up for everyone. If you have any questions please post them here and I will try to address them.

Brian Bischof

Recommended Links

ActualSavings.com

Your place for great savings.

LowPriceBroker.com

Low Price Broker

Online Dating

Who Else Wants To Know How To Find A Girlfriend Or Boyfriend - FAST?

Free Travel Guide

Discover how to fly for free & travel on a shoestring budget...

Paid Surveys
Get free information and details to more than 500 paid online survey companies that will pay you cash money to take online paid surveys. For example, when I'm given someone else's report to make changes to I have to figure out how certain objects are being formatted. If a field is in Bold, I can click on it and look at the toolbar to see if the Bold button has been selected. If not, then I can go into the Format Editor and look to see if conditional formatting is being used. The last options are to look at the Hightlighting Experts or my VB code if I'm using VB6 or .NET.

CR 10 fixes this problem by adding a new item to the Workshop Tree: Formatting Formulas. By clicking on Formatting Formulas you see a list of all the sections on the report. By clicking on the '+' next to a section it shows you the objects within that section. Again, click on the '+' and it shows you the properties that have formulas associated with them. You can examine each formula and make changes if you need to.

By adding the Formatting Formulas item to the Workship Tree, CR10 lets you quickly see which objects have conditional formatting and get a quick overview of all the changes being made to a report behind the scenes. Nice feature!

Hope this helps,

Brian Bischof

Getting CR.NET to Automatically Format

I just discovered a new trick for getting CR.NET to automatically format a number as a percentage. For example, let's say you have a number 55.99 and you want it to be printed as 55.99%. What I have done in the past is convert the number to a string and concatenate the '%' character to the end. Not bad if you only have to do this to one number, but a pain if you have to do this to more than one field. I was jealous of how CR stand-alone version has a '%' button that you click and it formats it automatically.

I went into CR10 and analyzed what is happening behind the scenes when you click on the '%' button. I found out that the button tells CR that the field is a currency value and it replaces the '$' with a '%'instead. Plus, it tells it to right-align the “currency symbol“. Wow, what a discovery. Here's how to do it in CR.NET. It looks like a lot of steps, but after you doing it the first time it is a breeze.

To format a number as a percentage in CR.NET:Right-click on the numeric field and select Format.

Go to the Number tab and click Customize.

Click the Currency Symbol tab.

Click Enable Currency Symbol.

Change the Currency Symbol to '%' Change Position combobox to '-123%'

Click OK, OK to exit and save.

Hope this helps,

Brian Bischof

Creating Crystal Reports Using Typed DataSet

Report generation is a very handy feature for any website. Reports help the users to analyze the data more efficiently and give them different views of the information. There are many ways to create a report which includes SQL SERVER Reporting Services, third party reporting tools etc. But most of these tools come with a price and as a developer we will be interested in good free products. So, if you have Visual Studio.NET 2005 installed you can also enjoy the feature of Crystal Reports. In this article I will explain that how you can generate Crystal Reports and display it in the ASP.NET web application.

By Azam Sharp

Recommended Links

Tarjetas de Amor

Conquita a tu pareja deseada con los poemas de amore que no fallan.

Postscript Solutions | PDF Software
Postscript Solutions is the leading distributor for PDF based plug-ins for Adobe Acrobat. Actually this is one of such posts.

Today I was deploying at customers systems part of IdM management solution which extends existing IdM solution with group management functionality (I will try to get permission to describe it here as I think it is nice thing in the shape how we've built it). This also includes some reporting functionality and we've decided to use Crystal Reports components to deliver this part. There was no problems with deploying Crystal Reports in development and test environments, but on production server after deploying Crystal Report redistributable package and our application we ended up with error:

System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800736B1): Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {11BD5260-15B6-412D-80DB-12BB60B8FE50} failed due to the following error: 800736b1
It was easy to find that this referrs to Crystal Reports library located in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Business Objects\2.7\Bin\sacommlayer.dll
but this wasn't giving us any explanation why this was happening.

We were trying to nail down the cause of this problem, we were trying to re-install Crystal Reports package and reboot machine - all time we were getting the same result, error on web page.

At the end I've tried "old school" method and after Crystal Report redistributable package was installed I've manually (using regsvr32.exe) performed un-register and register operation with this library.

And it works like a charm now :).
I've decided to post it as I found few other peoples looking for solution of this problem on the web so maybe another time search engine will point somebody to this blog post :).

By tomek on My day job

New Object Model Tools

Business Objects has released two tools to make learning and using the reporting API much easier.
